Description: This project explores Mountain Top Removal in the Appalachian Coal Region of West Virginia. Data and methods provided by SkyTruth.org will be used in a comparison study against the data and analysis conducted in this project. Four Landsat scenes were analyzed by each member of Group 2. Each MTR scene was analyzed in ERDAS Imagine, compared to a SkyTruth 2010 image, and reclassified into MTR and non-MTR sites.
The reclassified rasters were then converted to polygons. Noise and interference were removed from the MTR data by removing all mining areas that did not intersect ridge top, areas within 400 meter of Highways, areas within 50 meter of rivers and streets and areas not were less than 40 acres. The polygon was then checked for accuaracy by generating random points and checking each for correct classification.
