Description: The map to the right displays red polygons that depict MTR sites as classified by Group 2 (Sarah Love-Martin, Donna Cole, Kelly Lund, and myself) from a set of four Landsat images of our group study area. The noise and interference was removed from the initial MTR classification by taking out MRT areas near rivers and roads due to similar spectral reference characteristics. Additional MTR areas that were removed include polygons that did not intersect with mountain ridges and sites of less than 40 acres. Also shown in this map are streams which were derived using several of the tools in the ArcMap hydrology toolset.
MTR coal mining started in 1970 and has taken place on over 470 mountains. This practice has many nearby residents extremely concerned about the impacts to their air and water quality. Streams are hydraulic features that can be adversely affected by the MTR mining in part due to a process called valley filling. This process can changes the flow, or even existence, of streams.
