Description: MTR projects pose a serious threat the health and functionality of Appalachian ecosystems. This method of mining completely removes the areas of mountains that contain coal, the material is sifted, and then once finished the slag is placed back. Because the areas are so badly disturbed, heavy metals and other chemicals runoff and leach into the waterways. It has been shown that these events cause negative additive effects on mountain streams and rivers.
Because there are poor records of how many of these sites actually exist, a need for inventory has emerged. Sky Truth has been using historical satellite imagery to identify and assess these sites. I followed their general protocol for site identification in order to asses an area of West Virginia. After performing an accuracy check involving 30 random sample sites, it was determined that the presented result is 90% accurate. I found this work to be interesting and can see the application of this technique in other arenas.
