Description: For this project I performed an unsupervised classification on a Landsat image from the coal mining region on West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. I work in a group of 4, with each of us classifying a specific section of our study area. The first output from the unupersized classification identified pixel areas which looked to be subject to the coal mining practice of Mountaintop Removal (MTR). This first output had many falsley classified MTR areas becaue roads and rocky river beds reflect light similar to MTR areas. Using the buffer tool, I removed these areas along with areas smaller than 40 acres. I finally converted this MTR raster to a polygon vector layer.
I was the designated Group 1 leader, so everyone in the group emailed their layer packages to me. I compiled them all together and emailed the composite MTR layer back to all group members. I finally added the major river layers and labled by river name. There are certainly still falsely classified MTR areas, however I can be reasonable sure than most of the MTR ares are highlighted with a small percentage of other false classification areas.
