Description: The data displayed here represents MTR (mountain top removal) areas found in the Appalachian mountain region. MTR is a common and destructive practice in the coal industry whose evidence can be easily seen in satellite and aerial imagery. Using GIS analysis methods, our group of students (Nathan Bickle, Steven Coughlin, Jim Galliart, and Steve Hafner) produced a GIS polygon layer that identifies MTR areas based on Landsat imagery.
The imagery provided was analyzed using unsupervised classification methods based on the spectral signatures of the MTR sites. Each student was responsible for a separate section of the study area with all 4 layers combined after completion. Because of the negative effects that MTR has on the surrounding watersheds, a streams layer is also displayed that was created using DEM raster files, also provided by UWF. The final product of this exercise is an example of the importance and value of GIS analysis as it relates to the fossil fuel industry, the environment, and the population that lives in the midst of both.
