The New Mexico Department of Transportation's (NMDOT’s) Aerial Photography Coverages Map shows boxes where aerial imagery was collected. The images are non-geo referenced JPEG images located along Interstate, US routes, NM routes, and NMDOT-maintained frontage roads within New Mexico. Aerial Photography images along these roads are an approximate visual reference. The imagery is publicly available in digital format (no prints will be made). To request an image, click on a box in the map in your area of interest and complete the attached form. The box contains information about the date the image was collected for reference in the request form. The form contains instructions for emailing your request to NMDOT. Once your request is processed, the image will be emailed to you. There are no charges for images referenced within this map delivered via email.

The Aerial Photography shown in this map was primarily obtained from NMDOT’s Aerial Photography Unit and contracted consultants as needed for road design, road construction, and maintenance. They are a visual representation of the physical locations along these routes as they appeared at time of image capture. Certain locations may have changed in subsequent years for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, roadway construction, maintenance, vandalism, urban growth, etc. NMDOT will update this map in 6 month increments.

Why is Aerial Photography a visual representation? When image capture is obtained, an airplane is used. The airplane is subject to crosswinds, up or down drafts and turbulence. These naturally occurring weather impacts along with the natural curvature of the earth and natural terrain affects image perspective (such as a perceived shortening or lengthening roads and buildings flattening of features such as ditches, cliffs and hills, etc.). Tree foliage, snow or other ground cover also affects image’s representation.

What is the difference between Geo Referenced and Non-Geo Referenced? Geo Referenced means the images have been adjusted for the movements of the airplane and the curvature of the earth. These images (geo referenced) contain longitude and latitude information for placement into surveys, engineering drawings and computer-based geographic information system (GIS). A Non-Geo Referenced image is similar to images contain no longitude and latitude information or adjustments. For example: If a picture of a tall building is taken from the street, the building looks to shrink towards the top. This is called convergence. The image is a visual representation of the building and Non-Geo Referenced meaning accurate measurements cannot be taken from the image of the building.
