Service Description: A roadway segment that is a component of the National Highway Freight Network (NHFN). CFR 23 §167
Use: For Planning, Route Mapping, and Analysis
Guidance: The NHFN shall include the Primary Highway Freight System as designated by the Federal Highway Administration, all Interstates not on the Primary Highway Freight System, Critical Urban Freight Corridors as designated by the State in consultation with the MPOs, and Critical Rural Freight Corridors as designated by the State. Critical Rural and Critical Urban Freight Corridors have no relationship to the National Highway System or intermodal connector designations or urban codes.

Updated: Primary Highway Freight System redesignations will be initiated every 5 years by the FHWA. Critical Rural and Urban Freight Corridor redesignations will be initiated by the States and approved by the FHWA Division Office. For more information, visit the FHWA’s NHFN website.
Update Procedure: The NMDOT Planning Division's gov't to gov't bureau informs the the NMDOT Planning Divisions Roadway Inventory Program of changes. The RIP enters the changes into the Roadway Inventory System. The RIP makes any necessary administrative changes.
