Updated: State Routes are updated as soon as a change is approved by the New Mexico State Transportation Commission. Federal Agency route ownerships are updated every other year depending on documents provided by the FHWA Department of Highway Policy and Information. As of 2022 the County Routes were updated yearly based on County submissions to the New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee. However, the NMDOT Capital Assets Program now prohibits Counties from sending shapefiles as part of their annual submission of County owned roads. The county roads ownership data is now a stale dataset.
Update Procedure: Upon notice that a state owned route has changed hands, the Roadway Inventory Program makes the change in the Roadway Inventory System. On an every other year basis the Roadway Inventory Program reviews the Federal Shapefile and makes changes to the Roadway Inventory System as required. The County owned routes process is in flux as the NMDOT Capital Assets Program now prohibits Counties from sending shapefiles as part of their annual submission of County owned roads. The county roads ownership data is now a stale feature. The Roadway Inventory Program is exploring other methods to get this data.
Quality: This data is for internal NMDOT use only. The quality of State-Owned Routes is very good. County and Federal Agency Route (excluding Bureau of Indian Affairs) is fair. Other routes are generally poor.
