Service Description: Flood zones are defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to identify varying levels of flood risk and inform the Flood Insurance Rate Map. Floods are the second-most common natural disaster, and they often occur quickly in low-lying areas after heavy rains. The 100-year floodplain is the area that will be inundated by the flood event having a 1-percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year, also referred to as the base flood. The 100-year flood area is identified on Flood Insurance Rate Maps as a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).
