Description: A collection of murals from Northern Ireland, principally West Belfast, Republican and Loyalist, painted during the recent period of Troubles. The images are records which include historical representation, political standpoints, community concerns, forms of ideological address. The murals range from overtly political declaration, to brutal depictions of the conflict, to humour and irony. Professor Tony Crowley worked in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and has written widely on various aspects of language debates in Ireland. His presentation for the Claremont Discourse Lectures, entitled Speaking Through Walls: Political Murals In Northern Ireland , discussed the murals as a way of exploring how the paintings served not simply to express political viewpoints but to create physical and conceptual spaces.
