Description: Marine protected areas (MPA) are protected from certain human activities. They will necessarily include a parcel of ocean environment even if it is miniscule compared to the remaining area. As of 2009, the United States established the U.S. National System of Marine Protected Areas, with 225 individual parcels (out of 1,600 total MPAs) participating. Most MPAs allow for some types of extractice activities. Less than 1% of U.S. waters disallow all extractive activities ("Marine Protected Areas Government Website". Mpa.gov)
