Description: Oil and gas wells are developed to extract the fossil fuels from under the ground. In California, well site development is regulated by the Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR). This dataset is taken from the complete set of wells drilled in California. Of the 215,436 drilled wells known to DOGGR, 160,702 are listed as oil or natural gas production wells, and 593 of these wells are listed as "new". The cases marked as hydraulically fractured with "GIS SYMBOL" field codes for "new" oil and gas and dry gas identifiers were extracted and compiled for this layer. The DOGGR database does not distinguish oil wells from "oil and gas" wells. Dry gas is natural gas without condensate liquids. It is predominantly methane without the higher chain hydrocarbons that form liquids. The status of each well is indicated in the field "Well Status". New wells are those that have been drilled and developed but are not yet producing or "active". The majority of the fractured wells are oil and gas development, although not all. Some are support wells, such as water disposal and steam flood wells. Other FracTracker maps and layers contain amended datasets, which limit the dataset to just oil and gas wells.
