Description: Vernal pools are an endangered aquatic resource in California, due to rural land loss to urban/suburban development. The pools are seasonally flooded depressions on soils with an impermeable layer. They experience drastic season change from the wet to dry season, including dessication during the dry season. These micro-habitats support local endemic plants and animal species with specialis life histories, including a large proportion of sensetive species and a high percentage of native species.
