Description: This dataset contains data on the active wastewater pits located in the Central Valley (Region 5) and Central Coast (Region 3). These facilities are currently inactive. Wastewaters are composed of well drilling and stimulation chemicals as well as formation materials; high TDS brines containing hydrocarbons, heavy metals and naturally occurring radioactive materials. Wastewaters commonly contain oils and grease, boron, chlorides, bromides, VOC's, semi-VOC's, other petroleum and diesel organics; trace metals such as manganese and arsenic, radon and uranium. The data shows that in California. there are currently at least 1,140 pits; 767 are listed as Active, the rest are Idle. 434 are operated by Valley Water Management Corporation. This Region 5 dataset has revised the number of duplicated entries into the "number of pits" field. Pits with the same status that were located within a 1/4 mile of eachother have been consolidated, and the field "Pit Count" has been revised to reflect this change.
