Historic Texas Highways document historic highway alignments and their road-related historic resources to determine if they may be recommended eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Highway alignments shifted over time due to improvements, safety concerns, and government requirements. The Atlas records these shifts, which are based on historical map documentation, research and fieldwork. Individual highway projects with road-related resources included are available in paper and digital formats at Luther Hall at the Texas Historical Commission (THC). Road-related resources encompass gas stations, diners, motels, tourist courts, bridges, road segments, auto dealerships, and the like.
