Description: This dataset provides a time series (2000-2020) look at the amount of potential suitable reproduction habitat available for 547 terrestrial wildlife species on Canada’s agricultural land. Moreover, a value representing change in WHC is presented for each unit considered in the analysis, which translates to the amount of WHC points that were lost/gained each year over a 20-year period.
This dataset calculates the relative value of farmland and its associated habitats for wildlife in terms of available reproduction/breeding habitat. It not only provides an assessment of the potential for Canada’s agricultural landscape to provide suitable reproduction habitat for terrestrial birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, but also allows us to see how this potential changes over time in response to agricultural activities undertaken across the country. This allows Canada to assess trends in biodiversity and their interactions with agricultural production for breeding. This is an essential part of the country’s ability to demonstrate the environmental sustainability of the agriculture and agri-food system, with implications for domestic and international commitments, and maintaining public trust in the sector.
