Service Description: These features represent an update to the watershed boundaries for the Island of Saipan, CNMI. Acquisition of high resolution elevation data (LiDAR) since previous delineations of watersheds on Saipan enabled a more precise identification of watershed boundaries, subsequently allowing for more accurate analyses of surface hydrology and influences on water quality. This dataset was created primarily for use by natural resource managers and water quality specialists in the CNMI, but is intended to provide an updated layer for all GIS users that may find a use for Saipan's watershed boundaries. Watershed delineation for Tinian and Rota were also included and merged with this original feature layer.

Description: These features represent an update to the watershed boundaries for the Island of Saipan, CNMI. Watershed boundaries were identified through processing of 2007 U.S. Army Corps LiDAR (2.67 m. resolution), including DEM conditioning (filling), computation of surface flow direction and accumulation, and delineation of basins upland of significant pour points. Individual drainage units (basins) were created from the DEM derivative products, and aggregating to best fit the superseded (out-dated) watershed boundaries. These updated features represent a more accurate and precise delineation of watersheds, while still conforming to the broader geographies of earlier boundaries. Detailed documentation of this process can be found in the document "Saipan_Watersheds_2017Update.PDF"
