Description: The Water Focal group has had multiple conversations regarding the need to identify and protect cold-water habitat through the multiple regulatory and voluntary processes ODFW engages in. In response to this need, we have developed maps of denoting reach-scale water temperature for streams and rivers in your district using the best available spatial datasets (see next section) and we are soliciting your feedback. Our goals are to 1) identify cold water habitats for designation of habitat category 1 (see mitigation policy) and 2) identify cold water habitats to designate as unique habitat types for the aquatic prioritization.
We are limited by the datasets available to us at this time. Cold water is being identified by spatial layers representing a) baseline mean August temperatures from 2002 – 2011 estimated using a spatial stream networks model and b) maximum surface water temperatures estimated using forward-looking thermal infra-red imagery (FLIR). August is generally the warmest time of the year and the time of the year when water temperatures can be most stressful and impactful to our native cold water fish species. We recognize that these locations represent a small portion of a species’ range and these habitats are used in conjunction with adjacent habitats within which fish are migrating, spawning, holding, rearing, and foraging. For this effort, we want to locate our cold water resources to the best of our ability.
The next steps will be placing thermistors in locations that you have identified and developing policy associated with designation of cold water as habitat category 1 per our mitigation policy.
We are hoping to pilot this approach with the Water Focal group prior to collecting these data statewide. We have a few questions we would like you to address for each map presented (below) and hope that you will provide us with feedback on necessary changes prior to collecting these data statewide
Do the locations color-coded as ≤ 5 °C (cold) seem accurate and reflect your knowledge of where cold water is located?
Do the locations color-coded as ≤ 12 °C in the mainstem reflect your knowledge of where cooler water is located?
Are there other locations that appear on the map as warm (>15 °C) or very warm (≥ 18 °C) when you know them to be cool (<=12)?
Are there known locations where fish hold in summer to seek refuge from warm water?
Are there additional questions that we should be asking regarding cold water resources?
Instructions
In the NorwestRogueCoast and RogueSouthCoast_TIR attribute tables, there is a field named DB_comments. When you hover over a particular stream reach, the attribute table will appear. You will have the ability to edit the layer by commented in the DB_comment field. Please consider the questions presented above when commenting. We are interested in updating these maps to reflect your current knowledge about stream temperatures in your district. Please only comment when the map reflects something different than your thinking or if you want to add context to a particular reach (e.g. fish hold in this reach when temperatures are warm).
