Description: The aquifer system of the Eastern Shore is composed entirely of unconsolidated sediments. The unconfined surficial aquifer is composed of sand and gravel with smaller amounts of cobbles and boulders. Below the surficial aquifer the confined Yorktown-Eastover system includes aquifers composed of sand and shells interlayered with confining units composed of clay, silt, and fine-grained sand. Subdivisions of the Yorktown-Eastover are the upper confining unit, upper aquifer, middle confining unit, middle aquifer, lower confining unit, and lower aquifer. In some locations, paleochannel sediments have replaced the sediments of the Yorktown-Eastover aquifers and confining units. Within the paleochannel sediments, two paleochannel aquifers have been identified, both composed of medium- to coarse-grained sand and gravel, separated by a relatively thin paleochannel confining unit composed of sand, silt, clay, and organic material. The Saint Marys confining unit lies beneath the Yorktown-Eastover lower aquifer and delineates the base of the fresh groundwater system in Accomack and Northampton counties. Deeper sedimentary Coastal Plain aquifers and confining units mostly contain saline water beneath the Virginia Eastern Shore.
