Service Description: Since 1980, the U.S. has sustained 258 weather and climate disasters where the overall damage costs reached or exceeded $1 billion; the cumulative cost for all events exceeds $1.75 trillion. The Nation’s emergency managers and public officials use USGS science to inform citizens of the potential risks these hazards pose to natural systems and the environment, to improve preparation and response activities, and to protect the health of the public, all of which reduce loss of life and property. These projects are just a sampling of the research the USGS has conducted on the topic.
