Service Description: The VPDES points represent the amount of wastewater effluent returned to streams and were used in the calculation of accumulated wastewater and wastewater ratio in the Shenandoah River watershed. The result provides a screening-level view of river segments that receive treated or engineered water which may contain Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals that are not EPA regulated, but pass through the treatment process of permitted wastewater facilities.

Description: Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) discharge facilities in the Shenandoah River watershed were thoroughly reviewed and active permits were processed to calculate accumulated wastewater ratios in streams in the Shenandoah River watershed. All VPDES discharge points were classified into Municipal or Industrial Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WWTFs) based on the permit information. All VPDES discharge facility locations were verified with VPDES outfall locations and EPA Facility Registry Service's facilities. VPDES discharge facilities, VPDES outfall locations, and stream gages were spatially joined to nearest National Hydrography Plus Version 2 (NHDPlusV2) River. Wastewater entering in stream segments was summarized by COMID (Common identifier). The Summarized point information was used with NHDPlusFlowline attributes for streamflow and downstream order as inputs to a python script to calculate a few scenarios of accumulated wastewater ratio.
