LINZ Data Service (LDS) Item Page - NZ Coastline - Mean High Water Springs Polygon | LINZ Data Service
This dataset defines the Mean High Water Springs (MHWS) coastline of New Zealand and offshore island as a polygon feature layer.
This represents a significant advancement in providing a national coastline, with enhanced accuracy and reliability, based on elevation data. First published in May 2026, the dataset will be updated as new elevation information becomes available within a 12-24 months period.
A Data Dictionary has been published on the LINZ Data Service, which covers information about the process used to create the MHWS coastline and an indication of data accuracies (NZ Coastlines Data Dictionary | LINZ Data Service).
NZ Coastline – Mean High Water Springs is also available as a line feature layer (NZ Coastline - Mean High Water Springs | LINZ Data Service).
NZ Coastline – Mean High Water Springs has been developed based on customer feedback as part of the key data improvement plan for resilience and climate change (www.linz.govt.nz/products-services/data/types-linz...).
